Friendships. How to maintain a friendship, and be a good friend. 

 
 
 
 

To have good friends you must be a good friend. The following are guidelines to being a good friend. Follow these and you will be sure to maintain life long friendships..


• It is essential for a friendship to work that you both listen to each other.

• Do not put each other down or hurt each other's feelings.

• Try to understand each other's feelings and moods. Accept that sometimes your friend will feel unhappy, scared or stressed etc. Try to pick up on these feelings and offer them help, even if it's just listening to them or a shoulder to cry on.


• Further to above, do all you can to help each other solve problems.

• Compliment your friends. Tell them when you are proud of them, when they look good, or get a great hair cut etc. Even compliment them on being a great friend. Be genuine and mean what you are saying.


• Good friends can disagree without hurting each other. Accept that you are individuals and you will have different opinions. Do not let these differences cause fights or bad feelings.

• Good friends are dependable. Be available to your friend, and when you say you are going to do something, follow through with it.

• Good friends respect each other.

• Good friends are trustworthy.

• Good friends give each other room to change. It's a fact of life, things do change as we grow older. It could be a change of jobs, hobbies, likes and dislikes, partners etc. Grow with each other, and show interest in what changes are happening in their lives.


• Good friends care about each other.

• Remember your friends' birthday, anniversary, or other important dates. A simple phone call from you can make their day extra special.

  • Most importantly... treat your friends as you would like them to treat you!
